How Does VW 4MOTION® AWD Work?

The 4MOTION® AWD system can sense which tires need torque and makes appropriate power adjustments based on road conditions. When all the tires are engaged, 90% of power is distributed to the front axle, and 10% of the power is distributed to the rear axle. Weight is instantly redistributed if the 4MOTION® AWD system senses that a tire is losing traction. If the roads are smooth, then the VW 4MOTION® AWD system can easily switch to FWD or RWD, helping you conserve fuel by limiting the level of power sent to the wheels. Overall, this creates responsive yet capable traction control on the Albuquerque, NM roads no matter the condition.

AWD vs. 4WD

Maybe you’ve heard of AWD and 4WD and thought that they are the same thing. They pretty much serve the same purpose, but they’re not quite the same drivetrain. Here are some differences between AWD and 4WD:

  • On/Off: AWD automatically adjusts the engine power that is distributed to the wheels, and AWD doesn’t need to be turned on. 4WD needs to be turned on and off. When 4WD is off, RWD or FWD is used instead.
  • Type of Vehicle: AWD is usually seen on cars and SUV crossovers. 4WD is usually seen on trucks and other off-road vehicles.
  • Cost/Weight: AWD usually weighs less and costs less than 4WD systems.
