Which VW Key Battery Does My Fob Require?

Which VW key fob battery do you need to complete the replacement process?

  • For those with an older VW vehicle that has a VW key fob that looks like a simple Volkswagen car key, you will likely require a CR1632 battery.
  • If your VW vehicle was produced after 1999, it likely has a VW key fob that looks more like a small pod with buttons on one side. It will also have a retractable emergency key. If this is the case, a CR2032 battery is likely the right fit.

Replacing the VW key fob battery in a modern Volkswagen vehicle only takes a few short minutes once you have everything that you need. Find a small screwdriver and a new CR2032 battery. It is a good idea to wrap the flathead screwdriver with a piece of tape to help prevent any damage to the key fob in the process.

  1. Hold the button on your Volkswagen key fob until the emergency key pops out.
  2. Hold the VW key fob firmly in your hand.
  3. Find the seam between the lid and the base of your fob. Use your fingers to create a small distance between the two, and then use the flat-head screwdriver to finish prying both sides apart. Do this step carefully to avoid scratching the key fob.
  4. Replace the battery with a brand new one. The positive side of the new battery should face downward.
  5. Close the remote case tightly to secure the components.
